Sleeping Habits
Thankfully, I don’t usually have problems sleeping. But I guess I do have a few habits that, if I can’t indulge, make it more difficult for me to fall asleep:
1. I guess I have to start by admitting that I much prefer to sleep sans clothing. Pajamas are right out. They always get all bunched up and really get uncomfortable. They also make it harder to regulate the temperature. But even underwear is uncomfortable. I mean, what’s the point?
2. I really like to have a fan running on low. Not a loud fan, just enough to generate a little background hum. And when it’s cold, I still have it running, just not pointed at me. I think the fact that I live in the middle of an exceptionally quiet redwood forest makes me want a small amount of white noise in the background.
3. And finally, and probably most unusual, I like to have the radio on (only for about 30 minutes, which is usually more than enough time for me to fall asleep). What? That’s not unusual. Well, no, except I don’t like listening to music. I like to hear voices. And, in particular, I like listening to BBC radio. Those English accents knock me right out! Plus, they don’t have any obnoxious commercials, or even those "underwriter" announcements that NPR does. I think the voices thing is like having someone read to me. Probably goes back to my childhood. But whatever the reason, I find it most difficult to fall asleep if I can’t have my BBC!
Of course, if I take just half an ambien before bed, then none of the above matter. ;-)
Let me know in the comments if you have any unusual sleeping habits.
