Scorpions?

ScorpionI went out to my wood pile the other day to … well, you know, get some wood, of course. I took the tarp off and started grabbing some logs when all of a sudden I saw this scorpion just sitting there. Freaked me out out a little. I never would have guessed there were scorpions in the Santa Cruz Mountains! Luckily, since it was pretty cold out, in the 40’sF, he was almost completely immobile (hibernating?). But he was definitely alive because when I breathed on him, he moved. I went inside and grabbed my camera and took a few shots. The one on the left is the best of the ones I took. He’s a little over an inch long. Kind of small for a scorpion, but still pretty bizarre looking, especially since I’d never seen one "in person" before. After I took my pictures, I picked up the piece of wood he was on and took him down to the bottom of my dirt driveway, about 75 yards from the house, and put him into a tree stump. He landed upside down, but with a little prodding he got back on his feet, and presumably fell back asleep.
